Prodisc®
General Information
VendorSynthes, Inc.
ItemProdisc®
FeaturesThe basic principle of the Prodisc® is to restore at least the natural range of mobility and stability in terms of: flexion and extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation and compression. It allows for physiological range-of-motion combining all movements of flexion/extension, and lateral bending with translation. The axial range-of-motion is not limited by this implant, but by the surrounding structures. Axial compression on the Prodisc® is absorbed by the mechanical properties of the polyethylene component. The Prodisc® modular implant maintains the physiological lumbar lordosis, and establishes maximum cortical endplate contact. The proper implant fit can be achieved by a selection of 2 sizes, 3 heights, and 2 lordosis angles. The implant’s shape provides maximum support for the endplates, which protects against migration and subsidence into the vertebral endplates.
ApprovalInvestigational device, limited by U.S. law to investigational use.

Product Description
The Prodisc® design is based upon the physiological form and function of the natural spinal motion segment unit. Kinematics and morphology of the implant design integrates the biomechanical and anatomical aspects of the physiological spine. Modular design concept: Three implant components utilizing proven implant materials: Forged cobalt-chrome alloy endplate elements, and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene inlay element. Physiological range-of-motion is respected: Ball-and-socket joint principle. PE insertion and locking function: Easy plate insertion avoids over-distraction. Locking fit between plate components. Serves as a shock absorber.
