Features
  • Thoratec Corporation places great emphasis on the durability and reliability of its devices. The company uses space age materials, such as titanium alloys and Cardioflex® polyurethane, as well as advanced fabrication technology to make HeartMate devices.
  • Tissue valves, known to be gentler to blood cells than mechanical valves, have been used in the HeartMate LVAS for more than 16 years.
  • Thoratec has long recognized the need for blood compatible surfaces in its systems to reduce the incidence of clot formation and thromboembolism. In 1967, we developed textured blood-contacting surfaces to encourage the deposition of a lining derived from the patient's own blood. As blood comes into contact with these specially prepared surfaces, it deposits blood components, which develop into a biological lining resembling the inner surfaces of arteries and veins. This lining protects blood cells. Thoratec stands at the forefront of this technology and uses these surfaces in all of its HeartMate heart assist systems. These proprietary textured surfaces and tissue valves have greatly reduced the need for anticoagulation.

    CoatingThoralon
  • Sintered titanium microspheres line the titanium side of the blood chamber.
  • The custom molded Cardioflex® Polyurethane provides a similarly irregular surface to the diaphragm.

  • These features attract circulating cells to these blood-contacting surfaces. A resulting uniform and tightly adherent biologic pseudo-neointima allows blood to then contact only biologic surfaces that mimic arterial intimae.
    Pump Designpulsatile flow
OutputThe HeartMate is designed to respond to changing flow demands of the body. If a patient's activity level increases, requiring more blood flow, this flow change through the natural heart triggers a similar change in flow of the heart assist device. At rest, when flow demands decrease, flow through the device will also decreases.

    Product Description
There are two versions of the HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS): the Vented Electric (XVE) LVAD, which is powered by wearable batteries that allow the patient to be mobile, and the Implantable Pneumatic (IP), which is powered by an external Drive Console. Both devices are fully implanted alongside the native heart and are designed to assist the pumping function of the heart's left ventricle. Before HeartMate, end-stage heart failure patients had few alternatives when conventional drug therapies failed. The HeartMate provides a lifesaving alternative for these patients. The HeartMate's portable design and technological advantages allow HeartMate patients to be safely discharged from the hospital. In more than 16 years of clinical use of this clinically proven therapy, over 4,000 patients have been given another chance at life because of the HeartMate.
