A blood pump, implanted in the aorta (the large artery through which blood leaves the heart to travel throughout the body).
A connector through which the CardioVad connects to an external power source. This connector is called the ViaDerm™ Percutaneous Access Device (PAD).
An external drive unit, which operates the blood pump. Patients will receive two types of drive units: a small, battery powered one that can be worn in a vest or shoulder bag and a larger one, housed in a hard-shell suitcase and powered from household current.
The CardioVad aids the circulation by diastolic augmentation. Its physiologic effects are similar to, but greater than, that of an intraaortic balloon pump.

| The Kantrowitz CardioVad™ is a unique left ventricular assist device that helps the failing heart work more effectively. It is being used in a small group of patients with severe chronic congestive heart failure as part of an FDA-approved Feasibility Study. The patient can turn the device off and disconnect the external power source for minutes or hours. The Kantrowitz CardioVad™ is the only heart-assist device with the on-off feature to reach human trials. It does not require the patient to take blood thinners to prevent clots |  |
