    Product Description
    Ferritin is the main storage protein for iron. The ferritin molecule consists of a protein shell (apoferritin) composed of heavy and light subunits, which surrounds a crystalline core containing iron oxide and phosphate [1]. Ferritin is synthesized in the liver, spleen and numerous other body tissues, with major concentrations found in the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and intestinal mucosa [1,2]. Ferritin may comprise as much as 20% of spleen dry weight. In addition to serving as a major iron storage pool, ferritin may have a protective effect against iron-induced cell damage [2,3,4].

    Low serum ferritin levels have been found to be a reliable diagnostic marker for iron-deficiency anemia, (e.g. due to nutritional iron deficiency and blood loss) [5]. In contrast, serum ferritin levels are normal or increased in anemia associated with chronic disease [6]. Measurement of serum ferritin has been advocated as a screening test for iron deficiency [7]. Elevated serum ferritin levels have been observed in acute and chronic liver disease and lymphoid malignancy (leukemia and Hodgkin lymphoma) [1,2]. High serum ferritin levels have also been associated with an elevated risk for myocardial infarction in men [8].
