Demonstration of rubella IgG antibody in women prior to conception provides assurance of fetal protection from possible rubella viral infection during pregnancy. Aggressive immunization of pre-school children has greatly reduced the incidence of rubella epidemics, but a need still exists for accurate monitoring of immune status, especially for women of child-bearing age. Laboratory criteria for diagnosis of rubella inlcude isolation of the rubella virus, or a significant rise in rubella antibody level by any standard serologic assay, or positive serologic test for rubella IgM antibody.
