| Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. Like hCG, LH and TSH, the intact FSH molecule is a noncovalently-linked dimer consisting of alpha- and beta-subunits. Its production and secretion are stimulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. GnRH release is normally pulsatile, resulting in episodic release of both FSH and LH [1]. FSH binds to specific cell membrane receptors on ovarian granulosa cells and testicular Sertoli cells. In women, FSH is responsible for the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles. In the late follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, increased levels of estrogen secreted by the mature follicle exert positive feedback on the hypothalamus and pituitary, resulting in a GnRH surge and a peak of LH and FSH release [2,3]. This surge is followed by rupture of the graafian follicle and ovulation [2,3,4]. During the luteal phase, estrogens and progesterone exert negative feedback on the pituitary, resulting in low levels of LH and FSH secretion. In men, FSH stimulates testicular synthesis of inhibin and androgen binding protein in Sertoli cells, and acts with LH and testosterone to stimulate spermatogenesis. Measurement of FSH levels in serum are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary gland and gonadal disorders.
