The Carriazo-Pendular microkeratome is based on the principle of convex applanation of the cornea during the cut.
This results in the cornea being applanated evenly from the beginning of the cut to the end. This ensures that the intraocular pressure does not vary to the extent it does with conventional flat-plate applanation.
