    Product Description
Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) is a 68 kDa protein, which is produced primarily during fetal life by the fetal liver and yolk sac [1]. Human fetal serum AFP levels peak at ~14 weeks gestation, and production rates reach 19-26 µg/min during mid-gestation (14-20 weeks). Although production rates and estimates of total fetal AFP continue to increase after mid-gestation, a gradual decline in body fluid concentrations occurs after mid-gestation, probably due to a dilutional effect. AFP is effectively cleared by the fetal kidney and is excreted into the amniotic fluid. AFP also appears in the maternal serum, presumably by transplacental transfer and thus AFP levels in amniotic fluid and maternal serum generally parallel those in fetal serum. During mid-gestation, AFP concentrations are in the order of mg/mL in fetal serum, µg/mL in amniotic fluid and ng/mL in maternal serum. After birth, serum AFP levels decline rapidly during the first year of life and low basal levels are then apparently maintained throughout childhood and adult life [2]. The function of AFP is not well defined, however, measurement of AFP concentrations in body fluids has been useful in studies of fetal physiology and pathophysiology.
