| Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) is a large placenta-derived glycoprotein [1]. PAPP-A is produced in high concentrations by placental trophoblast cells, and is released into the maternal circulation in increasing concentrations throughout gestation until delivery [1]. PAPP-A is not specific to pregnancy since measurable levels have been found in non-pregnant females and in males. [2]. The biological role of PAPP-A is unknown, however, it has been suggested that PAPP-A may serve as an important growth regulatory factor. It has been shown that PAPP-A
specifically proteolyses insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4), thereby regulating local IGF bioavailability and mitogenic effectiveness [3].
