Product Description
Renin, a protease secreted by the kidney, plays a vital role in the renin-angiotensin system. The renin-angiotensin system regulates blood pressure, and controls water and electrolyte retention by the kidney. Renin is secreted in response to several factors including decreased intravascular volume and decreased plasma sodium and chloride concentration. Renin acts by converting the renin-substrate (angiotensinogen) to angiotensin I in the blood. Angiotensin I has no physiologic activity but is subsequently converted to angiotensin II in the vascular epithelium of the lung. Angiotensin II is a potent pressor agent acting either directly or via the central nervous system to cause vasoconstriction. In addition, angiotensin II stimulates aldosterone secretion from the adrenal gland, resulting in increased renal tubular sodium reabsorption and concomitant secretion of potassium and hydrogen [1]. Renin plasma levels are useful in the diagnosis of hypertension. Plasma renin is reduced in patients with hypertension due to hyperaldosteronism, while both renin and aldosterone levels are elevated in patients with renovascular hypertension [2].
