Product Description
Human sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a serum glycoprotein which binds several sex steroids with relatively high specificity and low capacity, including testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (combined 95% bound to SHBG) and, to a much lesser extent, estradiol [1]. SHBG specifically binds C18 and C19 steroid structures and regulates the bioavailability of sex steroids. SHBG is produced primarily in the liver. SHBG synthesis and release are regulated by a number of factors which lead to increased ( i.e. thyroid hormones, estrogens, stress, male aging, phenytoin, high carbohydrate intake) or decreased (i.e. obesity, testosterone, prolactin, growth hormone, female aging-menopause, progestins, glucocorticoids) serum levels [2]. Abnormal serum SHBG levels have been reported in a number of conditions, including obesity and female hyperandrogenism (including polycystic ovary disease) [1,2]. Serum SHBG levels are inversely related to free, presumably bioactive, testosterone concentrations, and as a result a free testosterone index based on the ratio of total testosterone to SHBG has been characterized [3,4].
